The Order to Apply Your Skincare Products

The Order to Apply Your Skincare Products

This could be impacting your skincare routine. Just like my 5th grade math teacher Mr. M always said, "order of operations matters" and he was right, even when it comes to your skincare routine.

What you use matters, but how you use it matters even more.

Your products are designed to work in a specific way and the order is crucial to maximize the results and effectiveness.

To get a clean fresh canvas, you want to first start with your cleanser and toner.

Then, when you're applying your products, you want to apply them in the order of thinnest to thickest.

I aways tell people think: serums, gels, then creams

Your lighter, more active products are designed to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Your heavier products are meant to seal everything in to support your barrier.

If you apply your thicker products first, you're essentially creating a barrier thats blocking everything after you apply it from getting in.

I tend to think in analogies, so you can also think of it like layering during those cold New England months we have. You're not going to apply your winter coat before your sweater.

Your skin works the same way.

And if you're still not sure what is "thinner" versus "thicker", let the consistency guide you.

Apply the products on the back of your hand.

If it runs or spreads quickly, apply it first.

If it is richer and stays in place, apply it after to seal everything in.

When in doubt always remember, apply products from thinnest to thickest.

Until next time,
