Is Sitting By the Bonfire Making My Acne Worse?

Is Sitting By the Bonfire Making My Acne Worse?

Your Fourth of July bonfire might be heating up more than just your golden-toasted or burnt marshmallow.

If you are acne-prone, sitting around the bonfire doesn't mean that you are automatically going to wake up with a breakout the next morning, but it can create a perfect environment for the skin to become irritated and congested.

1. Smoke, soot, and ash can contribute to clogged pores.

The tiny particles from a bonfire mix with sweat, sunscreen and your skin's natural oils which can increase the chance of congestion.

2. It can increase inflammation.

Smoke contains aromatic and acidic particles that can weaken the barrier and throw off yours skin's pH (natural balance). If your skin is also inflamed, it can feel more reactive.

3. It can lead to dehydration.

Smoke is going to pull water from the skin causing dehydration. When the skin is dehydrated, the skin is going to produce more oil to make up for it, which may cause future breakouts. (This is why hydration and supporting the barrier is CRUCIAL when it comes to treating acne!)

Rather than avoiding the bonfire altogether, give your skin some extra love and care by doing these few things:

1. Sitting further away from the fire.

Enjoy the bonfire without sitting directly on top of the smoke.

2. Don't skip cleansing.

After a night by the fire with smoke, sweat, sunscreen, and ash, cleansing is a must. I recommend double cleansing with a creamy cleanser. Mixi Hydra Cleanser and MYSTIQ iLuminating Cleanser are my favorite.

3. Reach for a hypochlorus acid spray.

This helps kill that bacteria and refresh the skin. I personally love Mixi Mist because the protective packaging makes sure the hypochlorus stays stable and effective.

4. Replenish dehydration with hyaluronic acid.

Heat leaves the skin dehydrated, this is the big glass of water it needs.

5. Lock everything in with a moisturizer.

A healthy skin barrier is one of the best ways to defend against breakouts and irritations. My favorite is Mixi Peptide Rescue and BIO Caviar Crème to give the skin that extra hydration it needs.

Remember, one night of a bonfire isn't going to ruin your skin. Just be mindful of what you can do to support it and care for it. What you do afterward makes all the difference!

Enjoy the fireworks, make the smores, take the pictures with loved ones, and let your skincare do the rest.

Wishing you a very fun, safe, and skin-healthy 4th! Enjoy with your loved ones!

Until next time,
